Belt Tension Calculation Tool

Correct calculation and correct application of belt tension is a critical step. V-belts and corrugated belts work on the friction principle. In addition, timing belts work with the wedge principle. In both types, belt tension directly affects the life of the belt and other transmission elements.

Low tension causes slippage, overheating or premature wear of pulleys and belts, while excessive tension causes excessive pressure on the bearings and causes damage to bearings and shafts. Belts have a wide tension range, but you can still drastically change the life of your equipment by calculating the appropriate tension range and initial tension.

Tension loss occurs in all manufactured belts depending on the operation. While this rate can reach 50% even for high quality belts, it can reach 70% for lower quality belts. For this reason, you cannot detect the correct tension in the belts by feeling. According to a study, in an experiment with more than 200 maintenance personnel, only 1% of the participants were able to tension the belt correctly in tensions performed with the "Feel" method. The majority of the participants applied a stretch of only 7% to 50% of the required tension.

In case of incorrectly applied assembly, there are two options, one is the belt is over-tensioned and the other is under-tensioned. In both cases, it will reduce the life of the transmission organs used. If it is over-tensioned, it causes damage to the bearing, bearing and shaft, while under-tensioning it causes slippage, overheating and ultimately damage to the belt. In addition to the correct installation of the belt, its tension also significantly affects the appropriate working loads and life.

Not all belts that are properly tensioned will feel the same because the “Feels” tension can be different due to the different materials and tension cables used in them. For this reason, the "Feel" method cannot be applied while the belt is being stretched. You can use our calculation tools below for this.
